Urie Mandle was of German origin and started his career as a Coro jewellery salesman, later joining Lisner. In 1938 he decided to found his own company - Urie Mandle Corporation - in partnership with Nat Levy. Headquartered in New York, the company supplied the leading department stores and Urie's son Robert, joined the business.
The Urie Mandle's company dissolved in the mid-40's due to a shortage of materials, depleted by the war effort. Urie retired and Robert joined up, later meeting Alfeo Verrechia, whose twin brother had opened a factory in Providence, Rhode Island where Urie had originally had his jewellery made. Alfeo designed a mandolin pin that Robert sold to Bonwit Teller for $13.50. In 1956 the R. Mandle company was founded and was one of the few companies at the time to forge a successful career supplying jewellery to Europe.
