Swarovski

In 1892, Daniel Swarovski created a machine to cut crystals, whereas before they had been hand cut. Three years later he set up his company in Austria and continued to innovate the jewellery industry with further developments to Austrian Crystals such as cubic zirconia in the 70's. The company's crystals are ideal for several other applications so are also used in a variety of other industries such as chandelier and figurine manufacture and optical items.

In 1956 the company created the Aurora Borealis crystal, which was coated in a shimmer inspired by the Northern Lights, in collaboration with Parisian couturier Christian Dior in the post war luxury years of the 50's. Dior used them to adorn his couture gowns and also for his jewellery.

The company didn't produce its own jewellery until 1977 and continues production today. Leading designers continue to use Swarovski crystals as luxury embellishments to their clothing and accessories.
