Selro Selini

Paul Selenger was born in Russia in 1911 and emigrated to America when he was 16. By the time he was 19, both he and his sister Fannie had jobs working for a novelty store. In the late 40's he established his own jewellery business, Selro Corp (named for his mother Rose) at which his sister joined him. His jewellery gained its signature style by its use of oriental faces, which some believe resembles the HAR jewellery brand. HAR (Hargo) was founded in 1955 so as Selro was formed first, HAR may have been influenced by Selro. The companies were not connected but
Selenger was an admirer and collector of its pieces.

Selro Corp primarily used the Selro brand name but identical pieces can sometime be found with the name Selini. It is not certain why this should be but perhaps it had to do with creating a second line so as not to be in default of specific exclusive agreements with distributors. The company also made many pieces that were unmarked but have such a distinctive style that one can find many attributed pieces such as the Asian genie girl in her own lamp.

Paul Selenger was known to have designed for Hattie Carnegie, one piece being a four leaf clover with one of his distinctive Asian faces in its centre.
